I met my first Norwich Terrier some 20 years ago, during a 3-year working holiday in the UK. It was love at first sight with these delightful, feisty and fiercely loyal little terriers. On my return, it was a two-year wait until my first pet Norwich joined me. Like peanuts, one is not enough and soon Chelsea and William joined my Norwich family. Chelsea, 'CH Blair-Na-Park Rural Lady' has proven to be the best foundation bitch and wonderful companion I could ever have hoped for. She and William (CH Soona William the Great) produced my very first litter of Norwich terrier puppies. I was spoilt from the start, with a puppy from that litter being awarded Baby Puppy of Group at one of our very first Shows.
That was some time, and many litters ago. Today, I still endeavour to produce sound, healthy Norwich Terriers with excellent structure and movement, fit for purpose and with wonderful temperaments.
Rewards include a Best in Specialty Show win, multiple Age in Show, Group firsts, numerous age in Group wins at All Breeds Championship Shows. Highlights include winning Best of Breed at the NZ National Dog Show in 2008 with CH Matalaena of Kaeva and most recently Best In Show at the Canterbury Combined Terrier Club with CH Kaeva Pay the Piper. This was followed by his Best of Breed and Best Junior Terrier award at the NZ National Dog Show.
Successes overseas have also been numerous and my dogs are as well-known and successful in Australia as they are in NZ. Aust GR CH Kaeva Right Said Fred is only the second Norwich to be awarded the title of Grand Champion, and Aust Neuter CH Superminx at Hayward was the first ever dog to be awarded the title of Neuter CH in Australia.
While show ring success is a wonderful achievement and a measure of breeding acumen, I count my best 'wins' to be those difficult whelpings, where things go wrong and decisions have to be made that call upon every ounce of knowledge and experience you can muster. The rearing of Ruby, my little premature girl is one such experience, and saving Denver, who decided to 'fade' at just a week of age. Weeks and weeks of broken nights, anxiety and exhaustion is rewarded when you see that little puppy playing with his littermates, scragging a toy, destroying a favourite pot plant or going off to live with a new devoted family.... truly the best 'win' of them all.....
